5"x7" Lino Print Card Young Man Unangan Hunter (Blue Ombre)
Unangan (Aleut) men would brave the Bering Sea on the Aleutian Islands in a hand built Baidarka (Aleut Kayak). They wore decorated bentwood hats with long bills making them appear and perhaps even give them the powers of a natural predator. Patterns and animal references were painted and carved to please and respect the hunted. They also represented the success of their hunts. The more elaborate the hat, the more prominent the man. They wore parkas called a Kamleika, usually made from seal and sea lion gut.
